Travelers Name The Worst Cities They’ve Visited In The U.S.

What exactly makes a place unappealing? Is it the distasteful behavior of the locals? An alarmingly high crime rate? Or perhaps just a lack of physical appeal? No matter what a person's benchmark is, there are some cities across the United States that have left even the most seasoned travelers swearing to never return. So while you may be up for anything when it comes to travel, you should definitely reevaluate your vacation plans if these cities appear on your itinerary.

20. Las Vegas, Nevada

While it may be a world-renown tourist center, Las Vegas is an unappealing place for one main reason — the behavior of tourists. Because it has a reputation for being a gambling and nightlife hub, Las Vegas has drawn in all sorts of seedy characters, many of whom contributed to the city earning the highest rate of domestic violence murders in America in 2011.

19. Youngstown, Ohio

According to one Reddit user, Youngstown is "pure depression." Sadly, he may be right. With 38 percent of the population living below the poverty line, this midwestern city is one of the poorest in the United States. On the bright side, though, at least the property is cheap, with the average home costing as little as $43,300!

18. Independence, Missouri

With one Reddit user nicknaming it the "meth capital of the United States," it should come as no surprise that the city of Independence has long struggled with methamphetamine production and distribution. But the town isn't facing this problem alone. The entire state of Missouri is dealing with the crisis, with an average of 27.6 meth labs per 100,000 residents. They're sure giving Breaking Bad a run for its money.

17. Gary, Indiana

According to Business Insider, this tiny midwestern urban area has been named the most miserable city in the United States! In fact, six percent of Gary's population left the city between 2010 and 2018. It doesn't get any worse than that.
