Professional wrestlers are frequently stereotyped as being big, mean, tough guys. Much of the time, though, that’s just their on-screen personas coming across. Just ask their partners – who likely see them as more than just burly men accustomed to beating people up. And talking of relationships, what sort of mate does a professional wrestler look for? 40. CM Punk and AJ Lee

Sometimes real life can imitate the crazy fictional world of the WWE. In 2011 three-time Divas champion AJ Lee switched her on-screen romantic attention from Daniel Bryan to his rival CM Punk. Away from the glare of the cameras, Lee and Punk – aka April Mendez and Phil Brooks – began seeing each other for real. And in 2014 they cemented their status as wrestling’s ultimate power couple when they walked down the aisle.

39. Charlie Haas and Jackie Gayda-Haas

Charlie Haas and his wife Jackie certainly aren’t afraid to mix business with pleasure. The couple – who have four kids together – were both working on the independent wrestling circuit when they tied the knot in 2005. And three years later they opened up their own store in Texas selling muscle nutrition goods.

38. Jack Swagger and Catalina White

Turns out that it’s swagger by name, swagger by nature. In 2009 the WWE star born Donald Jacob Hager Jr. managed to attract the attention of Catalina White – a model who’d graced the pages of FHM and Maxim. Within a year the couple had married and they later welcomed two children into the world.

37. The Undertaker and Michelle McCool

Mark Calaway – aka The Undertaker – had always prided himself on being a man of mystery. However, that all changed when he married fellow WWE star Michelle McCool in 2010. And the ex-Diva appears to have inspired Calaway to share more of his private life on social media. Indeed, the couple – who have a daughter together named Kaia – are often pictured vacationing or attending high profile events.

36. The Iron Sheik and Caryl J. Peterson

One of the WWE’s ultimate villains, The Iron Sheik also has one of the wrestling world’s most enduring marriages. The proud Iranian married Caryl J. Peterson way back in the mid-1970s. And the pair have stuck together through thick and thin. In 2003 the eldest of their three daughters, Marissa, was tragically killed aged just 27 by her boyfriend.

35. Road Dogg and Tracy James

Road Dogg won the WWE tag team title five times with Billy Gunn under the guise of The New Age Outlawz. And Dogg – aka Brian James – has also forged a successful partnership outside of the ring. The wrestler has been with wife Tracy for much of his career and the pair also have three kids together.

34. Rey Mysterio and Angie Gutierrez

Even when he’s unmasked, Rey Mysterio still cuts a colorful figure. The luchador born Oscar Gutierrez has covered much of his body with tattoos of his wife Angie. The pair became husband and wife in 1997 and have since had two kids together whose names the wrestler has also immortalized in ink.

33. Kevin Nash and Tamara McMichael

New World Order founder Kevin Nash and Tamara McMichael’s relationship hasn’t been entirely smooth running. The couple walked down the aisle in 1988 and eight years later welcomed son Tristen into the word. But in 2000 they decided to go their separate ways. Heath Slater established a reputation as one of the WWE’s most unpredictable performers while competing as a tag team champion alongside Rhyno. Inside of the ring the wrestler is renowned for moves such as the Corkscrew Plancha. But outside of it things appears to be a little steadier. He’s been married to Stephanie Jean – the mother of his two children – since 2011.

Perhaps inevitably, many wrestlers end up keeping things in the WWE family when it comes to dating. However, AJ Styles is actually husband to a schoolteacher. The devout Christian married Wendy Jones at the turn of the century. And the couple went on to have four kids whose names – Avery, Ajay, Anney and Albey – Styles has inked permanently on his torso.

30. Dean Ambrose and Renee Young

TV personality Renee Young got more than she bargained for when she first interviewed WWE star Dean Ambrose – aka Jon Moxley. The pair struck up such an instant connection that they soon began dating and four years later they tied the knot. Their wedding was anything but a tightly-planned affair, though; Ambrose and Young married on the spur of the moment at their home in Las Vegas.

WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett suffered a tragic loss in 2007 when his high school sweetheart and mother of his three kids Jill passed away due to breast cancer. 28. John Layfield and Meredith Whitney

John Layfield is likely to be far more sensible with the money he raked in than most other wrestlers. The WWE star tied the knot with financial analyst Meredith Whitney in 2005. And one of Layfield’s biggest investments is the private Bermuda residence that he and his wife relocated to in 2015.

27. Zack Ryder and Laurel Van Ness

The pair – whose real names are Matthew Cardona and Chelsea Anne Green – first began stepping out in early 2017. 26. Shawn Michaels and Rebecca Curci

As one of the wrestling world’s most entertaining figures, it’s perhaps little surprise to learn that Shawn Michaels got married in the bright lights of Las Vegas. The wrestler got hitched at the Graceland Wedding Chapel to ex-WCW Nitro Girl Rebecca Curci – aka Whisper – in March 1999. And the only other person present was an Elvis impressionist. Elsewhere, the couple later welcomed two kids into the world, Cameron and Cheyenne.

Jay Reso – aka WWE star Christian Cage – toured England as a single man and left the country having met his future wife. 24. Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae

Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano are one of numerous wrestling couples whose on-screen romance spilled over into real life. The pair, who had previously encountered each other several times in the ring, announced their engagement in January 2016. And they wasted little time in getting hitched – becoming husband and wife just eight months later.

23. Xavier Woods and Jess Watson

Masked wrestler Sting – aka Steve Borden – had quite the year in 2015. Not only did he make his WWE debut at Wrestlemania 31 but he also walked down the aisle with his second wife Sabine. Sting had previously been married to the mother of his two kids, Sue, for nearly a quarter of a century.

21. Jeff Hardy

Jeff Hardy was already riding high in 1999 after winning the WWF Tag Team Championship with his brother Matt. And his year got even better when he met Beth Britt in a North Carolina club. 20. Bret Hart and Stephanie Washington

Bret Hart will be hoping that it’s third time lucky when it comes to getting wed. The WWE icon got divorced to Julie Smadu – the mother of his four kids – in 2002 after two decades as husband and wife. Hart’s next marriage to Italian-born Cinzia Rota lasted just three years following a dispute over their living arrangements. In 2010 he once again walked down the aisle, this time with a woman half his age – Stephanie Washington.

19. Tyson Kidd and Natalya

18. Big Show and Bess Katramados

Despite his seven-foot-tall stature, wrestler Big Show isn’t the most imposing figure in his marriage. Rather, wife Bess Katramados admits that she runs the show when it comes to her relationship with the modern-day Andre the Giant. And following the star’s retirement from the ring in 2018, she now has plenty more opportunities to show who’s boss.

And the two performers, who wrestle for the stylistic and cinematic promotion Lucha Underground, recently announced their engagement on Twitter.
