It’s Thanksgiving in 2019, and after her celebratory dinner, Kim McDaniel is taking some fresh air with a walk along the shore of Lake Michigan near her home in Muskegon, Michigan. She’s keen to see what damage might have been done by a fierce storm the day before. But what she finds is so completely unexpected that she calls the Coast Guard.
Those who live along the shores of Lake Michigan are well accustomed to storms, as are sailors who navigate these waters. Fall often sees extremely wild weather crossing Lake Michigan, and high winds can whip up waves as high as 15 feet, causing erosion and damage to property along the shoreline. Bad weather can also put ships on the lake at high risk.
